circle time

Friday, 2 September 2011

We do like the simplicity of these side chairs attributed to Yngve Ekström.  Collectively, the spindled back and tappered legs - both of which add support to the circular aspects of the frame - make for a deliciously light and airy piece of furniture.  Add to that the sumptuous leather seat pads, and you've a seat we just want to sit in!

  1. More like a piece of sculpture than a chair, but then, one shouldn't be exclusive of the other. This is an absolute classic - beautifully proportioned.

  2. It's not Yngve Ekström ... it's Italian, but I didn't yet find out who designed it!

    1. Yes, we've read a similar thread over on Design Addict. If you find out who the 'mystery' designer is, please do let us know!

  3. I recently purchased one of them which is labeled with "GESSEF".

Business directories to follow there still exists a company called GESSEF S.R.L. in Italy, but they have no website. I wrote them an email ... lets see what happens!

I have also seen those chairs labeled with "Stolfabriek AB" which is a swedish company.

    1. Interesting. Ekström designed the Arka and Sibbo chairs for Stolfabriks AB, Smålandsstenar, so there is a connection between the designer and this manufacturer - although clearly this doesn't mean that Ekström designed this model. As for GESSEF srl, we'll keep our fingers crossed you get a response to your email!

  4. The first response came quickly:

    "Dear Mr.,
I've seen the picture. This model is, at least , 40 years old. I will check in the old files to find the designer. The problem is that to day just few craftsmen would be able tu produce such model.
    I keep you informed.
    Kind regards"
